Do you know how to play spades and / or dominoes?
Did you learn once but now you sort of forgot?
Do you want to be part of the beginnings of an artistic performance experiment around Black folks, cards, bones, and magic – want to hang out with us and play?
Join Professor Lisa Marie Rollins in an artistic experiment that begins with playing spades and dominoes! “Bones | Cards | Crossroads” is an exploration centered on passing down cultural knowledge and what happens at the crossroads of possibility when we consult the table.
The literal crossroads of the magic of throwing bones and shuffling cards, the crossroads of decision making and deals with tricksters, and the crossroads of performance, games and black play, gestural communication and passing down diasporic knowledge. (see: Hanif Abdurraqib’s article “A World of Black Intimacy at the Card Table”)
That’s a lot of words for me asking if you want to eat, drink and play spades or dominoes on April 17.
All are welcome, but this event is meant for Black folks who have played spades or dominoes in the past, but maybe it is fading or you don’t really remember or hell, maybe you are an expert. You will not be shamed for not knowing or remembering how to play! You can sit at the table and learn.
This event with be recorded and photographed.
